Are platies schooling fish?

No, platies are not schooling fish. However, platies are considered shoaling fish. While platies don’t form close-knitted groups, they still seek safety and comfort in numbers, especially when they feel threatened.

For that reason, you should keep platies in groups. A small group of three to five platies is a great place to start for novice fishkeepers with limited space.

Make sure not to overcrowd the tank. An inch of fish generally requires a gallon of water in the tank. Because platies can grow to be 2.5 inches long, each fish needs around three gallons of water to live comfortably. A 10-gallon tank should suffice for three to five platies.
